HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA - More than 80 teams of water polo athletes ranging in age from 20 to over 60 will compete in the 2007 Masters Open Championships - Presented by S&R Sport - in Irvine from June 8-10. With a strong emphasis on healthy competition and camaraderie, this event epitomizes USA Water Polo Masters' mission to support and encourage competitions among its members and those of other nations. In its third year as an "open" event, the tournament has grown from 58 teams, with several entries coming from outside the United States. The increase in teams is due not only to the success of the program, but also to the longevity and passion of its athletes. "We never imagined the event would grow so quickly," commented Event Director Susan Warner-Hopkins. "Calls from some of our 60+ male athletes started to come in after last year's tournament. Many of our masters athletes are pioneers of the sport and it's great that they still have the passion for healthy competition. Of course, the legendary Saturday night social could also play a role in the program's continued success." The entire event will be hosted at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine. With more than 150 games over three days, water polo fans will have an opportunity to watch a wide variety of games with teams vying for medals in 11 separate divisions. From the collegiate athlete coming out to play in the off-season to the 50-year-old mom who just started playing water polo, the Masters Open Championships is certain to have a game for all players. |
