Big Win Against Germany Puts Us In The Final 4 (July 28)

Hello everyone, sorry that I didn't give you guys the update of who won the games to meet the top 4 teams in the quarterfinals, I was busy focusing on our game plan once we figured out that we were going to play Germany.  We ended up beating Germany 8 to 5 today to advance to the final 4, it was a great team win.  8 different players scored for us which is extremely rare in water polo, especially at this level.  We played great team defense and stuck to our game plan and ended up opening up the game in third quarter with some great shots from my teammates. 

Now on Thursday we play Spain who beat Canada to advance.  Spain is a very fast experienced team and it should be a battle, but we will be ready, I hope you guys cheer loud for us, we should be playing at 12 pm California time on universalsports.com.  If we win it will be the first time in US water polo history that the men’s program is guaranteed of a medal at the World Championships.  The other two teams that will be playing on Thursday to advance to the gold medal game are Serbia and Croatia, which will also be a battle.  I will keep you updated.  Thanks for all of the support.

Advancing to the top 8 (July 25)

Hello everyone, yesterday we ended up winning against Romania 7 to 5.  This was a big win for us because with this win we advanced to the top 8 automatically and get extra days rest.  The game was a defensive battle and the heat was a huge factor.  It was a great team win, things did not go perfect for us, but we stuck together and used our experience to push through the ups and downs and came out victorious.  This tournament has been very unpredictable and it will be interesting to see the results of the games that are being played tomorrow.  The winner of Canada vs. China will play Spain, he winner of Germany vs. Montenegro will meet us, the winner of Serbia vs. Italy will play Croatia and the winner of Australia vs Romania will play Croatia.  The quarterfinals will be played on Tuesday. 

I will keep you guys updated with what goes on in the games tomorrow, should be interesting.  As for the team, yesterday after the game the players got to relax a little bit and spend time with family and friends and see a little bit of Rome, it is nice to have a couple extra free days to relax and rest our bodies for the big game on Tuesday.  Hope you all are cheering for us and will be writing again soon.  Don’t forget to follow us on facebook also, just log on and search USA Water Polo. World Championships Continue (July 23)

Hello everyone, I hope you got a chance to watch our two games on universalsports.com.  We opened up with Italy and won 9 to 8, it was a great game, especially for the spectators, the pool was packed with spectators and extremely loud.  Our team showed its composure and started the game with a lot of energy and defense.  We were in control most of the game and we knew that Italy was going to make a scoring run, which they did when they tied the game 6 to 6, but we stayed in control and regained the lead and never lost it.  It was a great way to start the tournament. 

Yesterday we played Macedonia and took care of business, we opened the game with 6 straight goals and held them to no goals, until late in the second quarter.  We ended up winning the game 13 to 6.  Tomorrow is a huge game, we play Romania who beat Italy last night 6 to 5.  Because they beat Italy and Macedonia also, we are tied in our bracket and whomever wins tomorrow will be first in the bracket and get extra days of rest and advance automatically to the final 8.   

Our team is very focused to get back on the medal stand again this summer and can use all the support we can get.  The accommodations over here in Rome are great, we are staying at a nice hotel and the pool that we are playing in is amazing. Our game should be on universalsports.com on Friday at 3 a.m. (California time). I know it is early but if you get a chance please cheer us on. First Game of World Championships (July 20)

Hello everyone, it has been a long time since I have written, but I wanted to fill everyone in on what has been going on leading up to World Championships which starts today.  Our team has been in full time training for the last month in Thousand Oaks fine tuning our tactics to get prepared to bring another medal home to U.S. Soil.  This time we are going into World Championships not as an underdog, but as a favorite, so there will be no surprises and every team will want to beat us. 

The team is feeling really good and prepared; we had common training with Montenegro and Spain this prior week in Montenegro before we came to Rome.  The training was intense and was with two of the best teams in the world, so it was very beneficial to us.  Tonight is showtime, you could not ask for a better game, opening up World Championships with the home team Italy under the lights at 9 p.m. with a capacity crowd of around 6000 people cheering, most who will be cheering against us. 

Our veteran team is prepared for the challenge of facing the home team in a hostile environment, it is an extremely important game, it is the first of 3 in our bracket and we would like to win all 3 and win our bracket so we get an extra day of rest and automatically make it to the top 8.  Please if you get a chance watch us online at universalsports.com and cheer us on, it should be on at 12 in the afternoon (Pacific time), I hope.  Remember we can hear you cheering all the way from the U.S.  I will be keeping everyone updated with what is going on over here in Rome throughout the tournament.  Thanks for all the support, will be writing again soon.

Final Day of World League Tomorrow (June 20)

Tonight we just played a hard fought game against Montenegro, unfortunately today we did not come out on top and lost 10 to 6, it was not our day, but it was a good game for us to learn from and prepare for World Championships in Rome.  Our team has not been together for a while and we are still fine tuning things, I think we will definitely be ready to make a run at the medal stand once again at World Championships.

Tomorrow we play Serbia in the 3rd place game of the World League Super Finals.  We played Serbia earlier in the tournament and lost 10 to 7, tomorrow will be a very high energy exciting game, both teams know each other very well, especially since we trained with Serbia for a week prior to coming to Montenegro for this tournament.  Keep on cheering for us, and will write again soon, if you get a chance the watch the game on line through the usawaterpolo website.

FINA World League Final Four In Montenegro (June 19)

Hey everyone it has been a long time since I have wrote, but right now I am in Montenegro at the World League Super Finals. We have our top 15 guys here and we just beat Australia 10 to 6 to make it to the final four. Tommorrow will be the true test, we play Montenegro at thier home pool in front of their home crowd that doesn't stop chanting the whole game, should be a fun game. They have a great facility here that can hold about 4500 people and it is packed full during the games.

Thanks to the us water polo website I hope some of you can get a chance to watch the game live on line. The other two teams that are in the top 4 are Croatia and Serbia. I will keep you guys updated on what goes on with the last two days of the tournament and will be writing more as we head to World championships in Rome in July. Back in Thousand Oaks (May 29)

Hello everyone, well I am back in Thousand Oaks, California training full time preparing for the World Championships in Rome this July.  Croatia was a great experience; I hope you all enjoyed reading the blog while I was there. My team ended up getting Third place in the Croatian championships, Tony is still over in Croatia playing for first place. His team Jug has won the first two games in a best of 5 series against Mladost, they should be able to take first place I believe. 

The European league Championships ended with the winner being Kotor from Montenegro beating Pro Recco in the finals.  Jug beat Mladost to receive 3rd place honors in the tournament.  We almost have our whole team back training in the United States.  We are waiting for the Tony Azevedo and Tim Hutten to finish their seasons abroad and join us in action.  We feel very confident and are working extremely hard to get back up on the medal stand in Rome for World Championships. 

For those of you who are reading please check out the website of our game times and locations, we have some great games coming up and would love your support, it is always great to look into the stands and see people cheering for us.  I will keep you updated.  Write again soon.

A Visit To New York City and Much More (April 20)

Hey everyone, it has been a while since I wrote, so I have a lot to tell you. First off wanted to tell everyone that I am going to New York on Monday to be inducted to the New York Athletic Club Hall of Fame, along with me being inducted, Adam Wright, and Layne Beaubien will also be inducted.  It is a great honor for us.  The New York Athletic Club has been our club team for many years and the club and staff have always supported us throughout our National Team Experience. 

It will be great to be back in the U.S. for 4 days and enjoy some good food and adventure around New York City.  I am not going to lie, it will also be great to be able to use my American cell phone once again, haha.  Well Last time I wrote I was telling you guys about Euro League Championships, well all the first games are done in the final 8.  Partazan beat Jug, Olympiakos beat Mladost, Pro Recco Beat Vasas and Jadran HN tied Kotor.  All these teams will play each other again on Wed to see who will advance to the final four, I will keep you updated on that.  As for Croatian Championships, Tony and his team Jug have made it to the finals, Me and my team Sibenik are playing Mladost tommorrow and if we win we have one more game against them to see who will advance to the finals to play Jug, wish me luck. 

After the Croatian Championships are done, My season will be over here in Croatia and I will be traveling home to start full time training up in Thousand Oaks preparing for World Championships.  Our Bracket for World Championships actually just came out today, we open up with Italy in their home town, and then have Macedonia and Romania next, if we win our bracket we advance to the top 8 automatically and then go from there, it is pretty exciting, I have a strong feeling that our team will be back on the podium once again at World Championships with a medal around our necks. 

When i do get back to Thousand Oaks, we will have some exhibition games against Montenegro and Serbia, please look on the US water polo website for dates and locations, I know me and my team would love all of your support and see our stands packed and cheering loud for us, Serbia and Montenegro are two of the top teams in the world, so these will be great games to watch.

European League Championships Elite 8 (March 30)

Hello everyone, a lot has happened since I last wrote.  Me and my team got knocked out of European League Championships when we lossed to the Montenegro team Kotor, it was a rough game to play, I got really sick and ended up having a throat infection that kept me out of the water for two days prior to the game, not the way you want to feel going into probably the biggest game of our season, but that is the way things go sometimes. 

Some good news is that Tony's, Jesse's and Ryan Bailey's team all advanced to the top 8 of European League Championships.  Tony and his team Jug will end up playing Ryan Bailey's team Partizan to advance to the final 4.  Jesse and his team Jadran HN are matched up to play Kotor the team we lossed to.  Then Pro Recco will end up playing Vasas and Mladost will end up playing Olympiakos.  Eight great teams in a battle to get to the final 4, unfortunatly Tony plays Bailey's team because I personally think those are the two best teams and one of them is going to get knocked out before the final 4. 

This next Saturday is our last league game and then I only have Croatian Championships left after that.  Me and my time Sibenik will be playing against Mladost to get to the finals and Tony and his team Jug will be playing Primorje. Meeting up with the National Team (March 13)

Hello everyone, well I am back from Germany, I have actually been back for about a week and I have plenty of updates. 

First off I will update you on what happened in the last round of European League Championships. My team and I, Sibenik lost to Olympiakos 11 to 6, we got destroyed in the 4th quarter once again, but it is OK, we will still advance to the top 8 in European League Championships if we win our next game against Primorac Kotor in one week.

Tony and his team Jug destroyed the Russian team Shturm 16 to 5, so they already have secured a spot to advance to the top 8, Bailey's team Partizan beat Vasas 9 to 7 and secured a spot in the top 8 and Jesse's team Jadran HN, beat Budva 13 to 8 and have also secured a spot in the top 8.  After my game in Greece I traveled to Germany to be with the U.S. National team for a training trip.  We did not have our full team, but it was a great trip.  I got to see all my friends for the first time in a while, some since the Olympics.  We ended up losing against Germany in our friendly game that we played, but it was great experience for some of our young players and also showed our coaching staff what we need to work on when we all come back together after our seasons are done overseas. 

The team went on to Hungary and played in a tournament called the Volvo Cup.  They played very well and got to play against two of the top teams in Serbia and Hungary who both had most of their top players.  I had to come home because I had a game against Budva, which we ended up winning 11 to 7, Tony and his team Jug beat Mladot-- their rivals  9 to 6, this was a huge win. Then Jesse and his team Jadran HN lost their game 10 to 5 against Primorac Kotor the team we have to play in a week and beat to advance to the top 8 of European League Championships. 

So, there is your update on the water polo scene that has been going down for the last two weeks. We have games again tomorrow,  I play Posk, the worst team in our League and Tony plays Budva, which is a huge game because if they win then they will most likely lock up the number one spot in the Adriatic League, which means they are number one in the toughest water polo league in Europe. Jesse's team plays Medvescak which should be a easy game for them. I will keep you guys updated on how things go this weekend.  The weather has been getting a lot better, it is actually sunny and warm some days, my teammates tell me that in a month the ocean will be warm enough to jump in, I can’t wait. It is frustrating to live on the water and have it be cold and rainy almost every day, but I guess I do get enough of the sun when I am in Southern California. Talk to everyone soon.

Hello everyone, well right now I am in Belgrade, Serbia, we traveled here today to scrimmage Ryan Bailey's Team Partizan for a couple days before we go to Greece to play the 5th round of European Championships against Olympiakos. The last time we played Olympiakos at our pool it ended in a 9-9 tie, so it should be a good game.  Tony and his team Jug play Shrurm, the best team from Russia, it should be a great game as well, Yug is playing at home so I give them the advantage.  

Bailey's team Partizan is playing at home against Vasas, the best Hungarian club team, this should be a great game as well, and last time Partizan beat them 9 to 8 in Hungary.  Jesse and his team Jadran HN plays another Montenegro team Budva.  So it will be a very exciting weekend of water polo, lots of great teams battling each other for points to be able to advance to the top eight of European Championships, after this round there is only one round left and you have to be top two in your bracket to advance, it is going to get interesting. 

After I play in Greece I am off to Berlin to be back with my U.S. players and coaches.  The team is going there for training for 5 days before they go to Hungary for a tournament. Unfortunately I will not be able to go to the Hungary part of the trip due to a Croatian league game I have to play, but the tournament is a friendly tournament and it will be great experience for a lot of our younger players that are going to represent our team.

A quick update on last week’s games, my team and I lost to Mladost 12 to 9-- it was tied up going into the 4th quarter 7 to 7, then unfortunately the referee's gave them a lot of home court calls and Mladost ran away with the game.  As I stated before, Tony and Jesse had easy games and both there teams killed their opponents.  I will let you guys know how the trip goes.  Talk to you soon.

First off I wanted to tell all my readers to have a wonderful Valentines Day Weekend, enjoy being with your loved ones.  Now as I told you in my last blog, this past weekend was the fourth round of European Championships and as always it was an action packed weekend of great water polo.  First off I will talk about my game which was at home against the Italian team Brescia. We ended up demolishing them 12 to 8, our home crowd, our defense, and our counter attack were too much to handle for them. It was an amazing atmosphere in my pool, every spectator that walked in the door got a free orange scarf and horn, so imagine 600 people blowing horns and waving orange scarves in the air, it was almost impossible to hear the referee's whistle, I loved it, it pumped me up, and we put on a show that the crowd deserved. 

Then there was Tony and his team Jug playing in Russia, as I said, anything can happen in Russia and they ended up losing 7 to 6, this a team they beat last time 15 to 6, crazy, huh.  Then there was Jesse's team Jadran HN and the Rematch with Mladost which ended up being a great game that ended in a 10 to 10 tie.  Ryan Bailey's team Partizan beat Egar in their home pool 11 to 9, last time they played it was a 7 to 7 tie.

Tomorrow we are back playing our league games, I have an extremely important game against Primorje EB another Croatian team that is very talented.  Jesse also has a hard game against Budva in Montenegro.  Tony's team should breeze by their opponent Mornar with ease, I will keep you all updated.  Besides water polo, life is going good over here in Croatia, the people are extremely nice, boy do they love their coffee. I feel like everything over here revolves around coffee, it is pretty hilarious, if you want to go talk to someone, you have to go have coffee to talk.  The weather is super cold, it is weird actually having seasons, unlike Southern California, but I am getting used to it, just have to bundle up.  Talk to you all again soon.

I know I have not written for a couple of weeks so let me give you guys a quick update on what went on in the Croatian league games that Tony, Jesse and I played in the past two weekends. 

On the weekend of January 24th I had an easy game against a team called Medvescak from Zagreb, we ended up beating them 10 to 6.  Tony and his team Jug played against a tougher opponent Primorac Kotor from Montenegro, Jug ended up winning the game 9 to 6. Jesse's team Jadran HN played another team from Montenegro known as Budva and Jesse’s team beat them 10 to 5.  Then this past weekend Tony had a easy game against Medvescak and destroyed them 18 to 6 and Jesse and I squared off at my home pool in Sibenik. Our game was easily the game of the weekend as Jesse's team is ranked number one in our league and we are ranked sixth. 

It was a defensive battle and the score at the end of the half was 4 to 3, Jesse had a really nice 6 on 5 goal on me in the first half.  I started off the third quarter with a one on nobody block that always fires up your team. We were able to keep it close for a while but they ended up being to strong for us and beat my team 9 to 7.  Jesse had a nice goal in the second half as well. 

Now this weekend coming up is a rematch of the third round of European Championships, the only difference is if you played at home last time you are away and vice versa.  So my team Sibenik plays Brescia at my home pool, Tony and Jug have to travel to Russia and play Spartak, they should win, but you never know when you are in Russia. Ryan Bailey's team Partizan tied Eger at there home pool and now get to try and get revenge in Serbia when they play at home. Finally Jesse's team Jadran HN gets to play Mladost, but this time it will be at Jesse's pool where they are hard to beat.  I will let everyone now how the games went; it should be a great weekend of water polo. 

Hope everyone enjoyed the Super Bowl, it was an incredible game, thought Warner and Arizona were going to pull it off for a second, but the Big Ben and the Steel Curtain Defense proved to be too much.  Hope you enjoy reading the blog, will write again soon.

Once again European Championships proved to be one of the most competitive tournaments in the world.  The third round was incredibly exciting, especially for the teams that my teammates and I are on.

First off let me explain my game, I can honestly tell you it was one of my favorite games I have played in since I have been here and it will explain the title of my entry.  We were playing Brescia, a team from Italy who is extremely talented at their home pool.  They were definitely favored and have two of the better foreigner’s on their team, Ivan Perez, the huge two meter man from Spain and also Molina one of Spain’s best all around players.  The game was very tightly played in the first half which ended with Brescia leading 3 to 2. 

The second half is where things got interesting.  We started counter attacking extremely well and playing very strong defense and scored 4 goals to their O goals in the third quarter to bring the score to 6 to 4 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.  We battled in the fourth quarter and then with 10 seconds left in the game Brecia scored a goal to bring the score 8 to 7.  No problem, just have to run out the clock for 10 seconds, right? Well not when you are in Italy.  We threw the ball back to my team captain and they swam and attacked him and with 2 seconds left he tried to throw the ball to one of my teammates but threw the ball to the other team at about 12 meters away from the goal, they shot the ball and I pulled it down thinking that the game was over. 

Well, what happened is my coach tried to call a timeout when he saw that the ball was going to be thrown away.  You are not allowed to call a timeout if you do not have possession of the ball.  There was huge arguments with the coaches and delegates that took about 10 min deciding if we had possession or not.  After about 10 min the referee awarded Brescia a 5 meter penalty shot with 1.6 seconds left on the clock to try and tie the game.  Molina their best shooter came to the 5 meter line to shoot the penalty shot.  I had a feeling where he was going to go and I was going to go to that spot no matter what.  He shot my upper left corner like I thought and I blocked the penalty shot to win the game. My whole team jumped in the pool to celebrate, it’s a goalies dream to block a 5 meter penalty in the last second of the game to win. Just a great feeling. 

The other game that was really exciting this weekend was Ryan Bailey’s team Partizan against the Hungarian team Egar.  Partizan was actually behind 7 to 6 with 9 seconds left and scored a goal in the last second to tie the game.  This was a surprise to everyone over here since most people believe that Partizan will make it the finals of European Championships.  Tony Azevedo and his team Jug rolled over the Russian team Spartak 16 to 5.  This was also a surprise because everyone thought it would be a closer game.  Then Jesse Smith’s team Jadran HN got their revenge on Mladost by steam rolling over them to an 11 to 4 victory.  Hope you all enjoy the blog and my story and the updates, will be in touch soon.

This last weekend of European Championships turned out to be as exciting as expected. My team Sibenik battled the best team from Greece Olympiakos to a 9-9 tie.  It was an awesome game for the fans who were extremely loud which was nice since the game was played at my home pool.  I think if we had my two meter guard in the water who was out due to a broken nose we would have probably won the game, the reason I say this is because they scored 4 of their goals from two meters. 

I had 14 blocks in the game, the Greeks definitely kept me busy shooting from everywhere.  Tony Azevedo and his team Yug also ended up in a tie 8 to 8 against the Russian team Shturm.  Yug was actually down by one with 19 seconds left and ended up scoring a goal to tie it in the last seconds.  Shturm has Alexander Sapic, one of the best shooters in the world from Serbia, he is the main reason why his team was in the game since he had 5 goals. 

Jesse Smith's Team Jadran HN lost to Budva 14 to 10, this was a surprise to me since I thought Jesse's team would win, but from what I hear there was a fight in the water and some of Jadran's important players got kicked out of the game.  Ryan Bailey's team Partizan beat the Hungarian team Vasas in a close one 8 to 7. 

Now that the second round of European Championships is over everyone is gearing up for their country's cup, it is a tournament before Christmas with the four best club teams in their country. It is a tournament more for bragging rights then anything.  I will face Tony's team this Friday, and the winner will advance to the finals on Sunday, then after that we have a break for two weeks for the holidays. This will be nice; I will be coming home to good old California, cant wait.

First off I want to start off this blog by giving everyone an update on how the first round of the European Championship Tournament went.  My team lost to Primorac 13 to 6, it was a rough game, we were down by one at half time 6 to 5 and then in the third quarter made some serious mental mistakes as a team and let the game get out of reach.

Tony Azevedo's team Yug beat the reigning Champions Pro Recco 10 to 9, probably the best game so far in the championships.  Jesse Smith’s team Jadran HN ended up coming back from a 3 goal deficit to beat Barceloneta 7 to 6 and then Ryan Bailey’s team Partizan ended up killing Marseille 22 to 5. This weekend is going to be another great weekend of water polo in Europe.  I will be playing at my home pool in Sibenik against the Greek team Olympiakos, it should be a very intense and physical game.  My team will be short handed, due to the fact that my two meter defender got his nose shattered in two places in our last league game, just wanted to give you guys a taste of how physical that game can be played over here.

Tony Azevedo and his team Yug will be playing a Russian team called Shturm on Russian soil which is a huge advantage to the Russians, and this will also be a great game.  Jesse Smith just got into Croatia 3 days ago and then traveled to Montenegro to his club team Jadran HG.  They will be playing another team in Montenegro called Budva.  Then Ryan Bailey's team Partizan will be playing a team from Hungary called Vasask, these two teams are both stacked with Olympians from Serbia and Hungary, this will also be a serious showdown.  I will keep you guys updated and let you know the results of these games.

After this weekends games everyone will be gearing up for their countries championship cups before the holidays, I will talk about that in my next blog.  Talk to you guys soon.

The format is four brackets of four and you play each team in your bracket at your home pool and at their pool. The top 2 teams in the bracket advance to the final 8 and then two brackets of 4 are made with the top two in each bracket advancing to the final 4. After that it is down to the finals.  The United States has 4 athletes being represented in the European Championships.  Tony Azevedo plays for Yug in Croatia, Ryan Bailey plays for Partizan in Serbia.  Jesse Smith plays for Jadran Hezi Novi in Montenegro and then there is Me, Merrill Moses who plays for Sibenik in Croatia.  I will keep you guys updated on how the first games go.

Sibenik, Croatia (Early November, 2008)

Hello everyone, well I was asked to continue my blogging and give everyone back at home in the USA a view on how life goes when your U.S. Olympic Water Polo athletes go to play professionally in Europe.  Those of you who followed my blog during the Olympics thank you and I hope you enjoyed watching our team.  Sibenik, Croatia is where I live and will be playing water polo for the next 9 months.  The name of my club team is Sibenik NCP; we are part of the Adriatic League which is considered the strongest water polo league in the world. 

The reason most of us decide to play professionally in Europe is because of the game experience we gain over here. This year I will play around 65 games and will see some of the best shooters in the world shooting on me.  Also it is nice to get paid to play the sport you love.  I am in week 6 of my season; we have won 2 games, lost 2 games and tied one.  We have a game this Wednesday and then another one on Saturday.  We usually don’t have two games in one week, but because of the day of the dead, which is the holiday over here for our Halloween, we had the weekend off.  My team before the season started was considered to be a huge underdog in our league, but with my goalkeeping and leadership I have made teams aware that we are a team to be taken seriously. 

Two weeks ago we qualified for European Champions League, which is a huge accomplishment; this is the first time in my clubs history that we have been in the Champions League.  Tony Azevedo is also playing over here in Croatia, he plays for the Jug, they are considered one of the best teams in the world, can’t wait to play against him, ha-ha.  Well I hope you guys enjoy the blogs, I will keep everyone updated.  Talk to you soon.
