Florida Coast Mmaking First Ever Journey to Speedo Top 40 | Florida Coast Mmaking First Ever Journey to Speedo Top 40 |
For as long as it has been in existence the Speedo Top 40 open tournament has been an event mostly dominated by California based clubs. While the New York Athletic club has often had a presence and garnered a great deal of success; the rest of the squads in the mix have always called the Golden State home. With that in mind the entrance of the Florida Coast club based out of Miami, Florida is all the more important as they provide just another example of the expansion of water polo all the way across the country to the Sunshine State. That said Florida Coast is no stranger to California as a group of their girls were profiled during the recent Junior Olympics for having spent nearly their entire summer in the state traveling up and down the coast training for water polo. That aforementioned group of 18 and under girls will largely comprise the same squad that head coach Alex Bennett will bring to Los Alamitos from November 2-4. With all that experience Bennett is excited for what his team can accomplish when they tangle with some of the best, “My expectations are that they become higher quality players and gain awesome experience,” said Bennett. The coach also knows the value of the other part of the event and that is being able to witness some of the best in the game compete, “I am very eager to see the games between all the national teams as well. Most of my girls have not seen a water polo game at that level, so I am hoping that it clicks in at least one of them to want to work hard and be able to represent our country. I am also hoping to pick something up to give back to my girls,” Bennett concluded. Generally the Florida Coast team has missed this event in year’s past due to a conflict with the annual state swimming championships. This year the championships will be ending on November 1 and thanks to some dedicated parents the girls on the team will participate in the swimming championships and then immediately turn around and board a flight to Los Angeles. Participation in the event for Florida Coast is just one of the positive results to come out of this year’s Top 40. An added bonus will be the increased exposure for expansion of the sport and ideally motivation for other clubs across the United States to strive for greatness. “Hopefully, other teams will see that playing some of the best teams in the country will only improve your own players. You may get beat, but if you keep at it year after year and play these top teams eventually your own team will become competitive and be able to compete at the same level. This will only encourage water polo expansion in the other zones,” noted Bennett. Florida Coast joins NYAC, SET, Commerce, SOCAL, CBAD, Northshore, CBU Lancers, HBWPC, NSD Stars, Golden West, Los Alamitos, South Irvine, Irvine WPC, CHAWP, and SBWPC. The event will be get started this November 2 at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos. For more information and to purchase tickets stay with usawaterpolo.org |
