World Cup 2010
ImageThe draws for the XIV FINA World Cup to be held 27 July to 1 August in Oradea, Romania were held yesterday in the hosting city. Here the reigning World champion Serbia will face their big rival Croatia in the prelims. The competition was facing a dramatic change as the field of participants has made up a mixture of the top three of the latest FINA World Championships and five continental representatives.
In former times the top eight of the previous top event were invited to take part in the FINA World Cup which was creating a very special setting due to preference of a playing system without any continental representative. The new system is copying the current playing mode of the Women´s Olympic Tournament, but was facing critics especially in men´s waterpolo due to the absence of quite a number of top nations.

Furthermore the top four are qualifying for the 2011 FINA World Championships, so that the qualification chance for other European nations is worsening. In the meantiime the new playing system was already facing a blow as the African representative - South Africa - had to be replaced by another team from Asia which did not take part in the 2009 FINA World Championships: Iran.
