Pan-American titles and Olympic berths
Seven Melbourne participants to compete for Pan-American titles and Olympic berthsEight men´s and six women´s teams will take part in the two waterpolo tournaments of the XV Pan American Games to be held 13-29 July 2007 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Both tournaments will also be the Olympic qualifiers for the Americas, so that the two gold medallists will gain a berth as continental representative at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
In contrast to other ASUA waterpolo events the numbers of entries was strictly limited to 14 teams, so that the participating nations had to qualify for this multi-sports event. Led by the new World Champion USA, five of six women´s teams already took part in this year´s FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia; furthermore the current number six Venezuela competed in the 2003 and 2005 World Championships. In men´s waterpolo USA and Canada competed at the Melbourne Championships and showed improved performances.

In contrast to the other aquatics events at the huge multi-sports event the waterpolo matches will be held at the Parque Aquático Júlio de Lamare pool next to the famous Maracaná football stadium, which already hosted quite a number of World League matches in recent past and the 2006 ASUA Cup. ASUA TWPC chairman Monica Brochero from Argentina already praised the conditions at the venue, but the participants are also facing a pretty tough schedule with round-robin matches, semi-finals and finals, which will start on 17 July.
