LONDON 2012 Olympic Games

The building of the Olympic Park is one of the largest construction and engineering projects in Europe. We have to deliver a project twice the size of Heathrow Terminal Five in half the time. We are on track to deliver. We have hit all our milestones to date as we take forward the planning of the Games venues and their long-term legacy use hand in hand. In the last year we have agreed the site plan and our timetable for delivery. We have submitted one of the largest planning applications in European history. The first construction project – the underground tunnels for the powerlines – has been completed on time and to budget. Stage one – the planning and set up for the Olympic Park - is drawing to a close. We are now in stage two – what we are calling ‘demolish, dig, design’. This means getting the site ready for the construction work that will begin in earnest in summer 2008. The 2.5 square kilometre site is contaminated land, so we will be undertaking significant remediation work to clean it up. We also have to demolish a large number of buildings. At the same time we are preparing the designs for the sporting venues that, alongside the Olympic Village, will be the centerpiece of the new Olympic Park. We are setting out 10 major delivery milestones to the Beijing Games in August 2008. They are challenging, but it is important that we are transparent and accountable and that people can judge how we are doing. These will provide the foundations for the construction of the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, and the legacy beyond.
