New Age Groups in Water Polo from 2009 |
LEN will introduce new age groups at the Water Polo Championships as of 2009. Up to now, every even year European Junior Championships were carried out for athletes aged 15 to 19 years and the odd years were reserved for the European Youth Championships for athletes aged 15 to 17 years.
From 2009 “Under 20 (U 20)” Championships – analogous to football and other sports – will be organised every second year. The Championships for the age-group 17 years and younger will then be called “Junior Championships”. These will be organised for the first time in 2010 and after that every two years. These regulations also apply to the young female water polo players in Europe. LEN is thus following the change of age groups of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) established during their Congress in Spring in Melbourne (AUS). As an interim solution a Championship for junior and youth age groups will be carried out next year. This is a decision taken by the LEN Bureau, following a proposal submitted by the LEN Technical Water Polo Committee. |
