Polo referees from more than seven different countries will meet in Manchester next month as Britain hosts one of its first ever FINA Water Polo School for Referees. The course is being held from 8-10 June as part of the legacy programme of the LEN European Nations Trophy and will enable a large group of British referees to undertake important personal development as British swimming develops its workforce ahead of London 2012. The aim of the course is to increase the number and quality of FINA referees and help create a universal interpretation and application of water polo rules. Referees that successfully complete the three-day course organised by the international federation for aquatics will achieve a FINA qualification and will be eligible to be nominated by their national federations to officiate at future international events. FINA referees must re-take the course every two years to keep up to date with the latest rules and ensure there is a high standard of officials worldwide. UK Sport is part-funding Britain’s referee contingent as part of its support of the LEN European Nations Trophy. “Legacy initiatives are an important part of any major event planning,” said Martin Morton, UK Sport’s Senior Events Consultant. “We are fully supportive of this programme which will offer fantastic development experiences for British officials. Schemes such as this also help us build capacity ahead of London 2012, where we hope to see a high percentage of British officials in key positions.” -ENDS- For more information contact British Swimming media officer Amanda Smith on 01509 632238, 07876 652 318 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it British Swimming is the National Governing Body for Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Open Water in Great Britain.
