In the matches of Group A the Hungarians achieved a clear sweep, but observers do not really know how strong they are. Today head coach Ferenc Derekas´ players achieved their highest victory up to now, beating winless Slovenia 10-3. The head-to-head duel for the second place was won by the Dutch, who never looked back and gained a 10-8 victory in a real nailbiter. The French levelled the game once in the third period, but lost red-carded head coach Gilles Madelnat in the final period and did not score any more in a real battle of nerves. In Group C the reigning title-holders from Serbia achieved the highest victory of the tournament, beating Belarus 27-2 in a one-sided match. In the crucial head-to-head duel for the second place Slovakia showed a decent performance, but beat underdog Poland 9-7 and stayed in the top eight again. Poland´s little chances for a historical medal round berth were smashed today by Slovakia already in the opening phase of the decisive head-to-head duel. In the matches of Group D Romania was downed 17-3 by newcomer Montenegro and will finish last after the Preliminary Round matches. At the 2005 Championships Romania had still gained a seventh place. Here Croatia ensured the first place by a clear 22-4 victory against Turkey and was joined by debutant Montenegro. waterpoloworld report
