Dezso Gyarmati celebrates today

IOC named him the biggest and best waterpolo player of all time. Dezso Gyarmati celebrates his 80th birthday on 23rd October.

He started his sports career in the ring of box and the field of hand-ball. But then he switched to waterpolo and became one of the most talented quarterback and forward player. 3 times Olympic Champion, 2 times  European Champion and  6 times  Hungarian Champion.

1956 – Olympic Champion (Melbourne)

1960 – Olympic Bronze Medalist (Rome)

1979 – 1st place in World Cup (Belgrade)

1980 – Olympic bronze medal (Moscow)

During the revolution of ’56, he was one of the leaders of the Revolutionary Committee. Between 1957 and 1958 he lived in emigration. In 1958 he was given amnesty, but was prohibited from playing waterpolo. He worked as unskilled worker (with a University Degree in History of Arts).

Between 1990-1994 he was a congressman of the first democratic National Parliament.

He’s the founding member of Swimming and Waterpolo Department of “KSI” (Central Sports School). KSI is a special sport institution for talented children (Players like e.g. Gergely Kiss, Rajmund Fodor were also students of the school).

Dezso Gyarmati is the Sportsman of the Nation, member of the Club called “Immortals”.

He was married to Eva Szekely (Olympic champion and silver medalist swimmer). His daughter, Andrea Gyarmati was Olympic silver medalist swimmer. His grandson, Mate Hesz, is a waterpolo player, member of Fehervar Polo SE and after a long-time he plays again in OB1 Hungarian League.

Waterpolo is still his big love, and still works for the reputation of Hungarian waterpolo.
