Two aquatic coaches have graduated from the pioneering UK Sport Elite Coach scheme after three years of developing their coaching skills. Loughborough University’s Kevin Renshaw and City of Sheffield’s Adam Sotheran were both members of the original eight coaches selected for the scheme, which has gone from strength to strength and now has a further 25 coaches enrolled on the three-year programme. The Elite Coach scheme was established to accelerate the development of the nation’s most exciting coaching prospects across a wide range of sports. The focus has been on practical applications to elite coaching, and there has been a strong emphasis on the skills required to lead a high performance programme and manage a team of expert support staff in order to maximise athletic performance. Each coach has benefited from quality learning experiences featuring the latest international research presented by leading experts. Renshaw believes he has learnt a lot from the scheme, which has ultimately benefited his group of swimmers, which includes Olympic medallist David Davies. “This scheme has helped me to develop in a lot of different ways,” he said. “I have changed as a coach and as a person. Working with all the different people has opened my eyes to different ways of working. “I used to be quite an autocratic coach but now I ask more questions of my swimmers. That way they can learn the answers themselves instead of being handed information. It makes the swimmers accountable for their performance and then they learn from their mistakes. “I have noticed that the swimmers have responded really well to my new style and I have already seen some of them take massive strides forward which is really great for me to see. I have been working with David Davies for seven to eight weeks now and it is going really well and I think as a team we are bonding together.” For more information contact ASA Media Assistant Gemma Field on 01509 632262, 07917 726431 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it British Swimming is the National Governing Body for Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Open Water in Great Britain.
