Print E-mail
Three weeks after the tournament victory at the Olympic qualificiers a real “Super Saturday” was contested in the German Men´s League. In the championship round of the Deutsche Wasserball-Liga Germany´s top four were facing each other, including the top match between the two unbeaten teams of SSV Esslingen and the reigning national champion Wasserfreunde Spandau 04. Furthermore the teams ranking fifth to eight played some of the key matches for the fifth place, and in the relegation round the bottom-ranking teams of SSF Aegir 07 Uerdingen and SC Hellas-99 Hildesheim were facing each other.
LEN Trophy participant SSV Esslingen was still celebrating the 100th anniversary in the morning, but in the top match which was contested in the afternoon in the nearby Stuttgart the reining title-holders of Spandau 04 outscored the home team already in the first half, 9-2, and gained a 16-8 victory after 32 one-sided minutes. In the duel of the German internationals Spandau led by Serbian head coach Nebojsa Novoselac kept Oradea top scorer Heiko Nossek down to nil goals. Interestingly enough Spandau´s Marc Politze only netted one ball and Moritz Oeler remained scoreless as well, but Marko Savic scored five goals and the defence of the Berliners around goalkeeper Alexander Tchigir stood firm for three quarters.

The second top match and local derby between Krefeld-based SV Bayer 08 Uerdingen und Amateur SC Duisburg ended with a great comeback. Bayer already led Duisburg 11-8 in the third period, but head coach Arno Troost´s players scored six unanswered goals and still gained a 14-12 victory. Former German international Florian Müller scored six goals for the guests, who are staying in the race for the first place. Uerdingen was missing Germany´s 2007 top waterpolo player Tim Wollthan due to a broken hand and finally run out of power.

In the crucial head-to-duels for the fifth place SG W98/Waspo Hanover gained two victories. The Hanoverians gained an 11-9 away victory against SC Magdeburg and beat LEN Trophy winner SG Neukölln in the home match, 7-6, when Ingo Pickert scored from the penalty-line 25 seconds before the final whistle. In the relegation round the tailender SC Hellas-99 Hildesheim achieved the first victory. The team from Northern Germany gained a 9-8 away victory against direct rival SSF Aegir 07 Uerdingen, one of three national league clubs from Krefeld. Here Freie Schwimmer Hanover is aiming for the first place after the eighth victory in a row.
