ImageRussia´s former national champion Shturm 2002 Chekhov has announced a pretty spectacular change right before the first-leg match in the round of last 16 of the Men´s LEN Trophy. The current head coach and former Olympic champion Aleksandar Kabanov has been replaced by 1987 European champion Aleksandar Ogrodnikov, who had already taken over the Russian men´s national team during the summer. After less satisfying performances of the three-time Russian champion at the beginning of the season in the EuroLeague, national championships and Chekhov´s annual Governor Cup the management of the Russian vice-champion has decided to dismiss head coach Aleksandar Kabanov and his assistant Boris Ukhov. For the first time since the inaugural EuroLeague season the ambitious team from the Moscow region had missed the prestigious Preliminary Round matches of this competition and had to move the LEN Trophy.

The former senior international Ogorodnikov, who conducted his career as player in 2004 in the German league, already took over the Russian men´s national team during the summer for the FINA World League and the LEN Olympic Games Qualification Tournament in Bratislava, Slovakia after the illness of head coach Boris Popov. The 1987 European champion as player will receive a contract until the end of the season, as the club announced. His first challenge as new head coach will be an away match in the round of last 16 in the LEN Trophy. Tomorrow the Croatian representative VK Mornar “Brodospas” Split will welcome Russia´s number two for the first-leg match.
