A subsequent blood alcohol test found that the driver, Zoltan Kosz , a member of the Hungarian Olympic water polo team that won gold in Sydney, had been under the influence of alcohol.
Eyewitness accounts said that police repeatedly tested Kosz with a Breathalyzer. When he protested, they handcuffed him.
Passenger Zsolt Petovary then struck the police officer and repeatedly kicked the police car, knocking off the license plate and denting the fender. Police called for backup to subdue the two men and took them into the station, where they were booked and released.
Blood alcohol test results on the driver became available on Friday afternoon and showed that Kosz had a medium-high level of alcohol in his blood at the time he was stopped. Hungarian law haszero tolerance for drinking and driving.
Tamas Ambrus, coach of the water polo team in Pecs, Southwest Hungary, home team to both players, said he had ordered their suspension.
"They are not playing on the team until we find out exactly what happened," said Ambrus. He sounded quite angry, saying that this was not why the team had worked so hard over the past three years to build the team up to international standards.
