MANILA, June 9 (PNA) – Southeast Asian Games-bound Philippine water polo team assured itself of finals slot after posting two more victories in the Australian Country Water Polo Championships being held in Kalgoorlie in Perth, Australia. The Nationals, whose trip was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), dominated anew the teams of Queensland, 14-4, and Australian Defense Forces, 19-2, to remain undefeated in five-team six-day tournament. “We are now seeded to the finals on June 9,” said Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (PASA) president Mark Joseph in a text message Thursday. Joseph said the Philippines faces next New South Wales and Western Australia with high hope of completing another sweep of the second round elimination. The Philippines swept the first round, beating Queensland (21-9), the Australian Defense Force (18-3), powerhouse New South Wales (10-6) and Western Australia (17-3). “Our team is playing way beyond expectation, and we are very proud of them. We just hope that their performance will continue to soar even after this tournament and into the SEA Games,” Joseph said. After the tournament, the team will play in a series of pocket matches against Australian national team. The Nationals are also set to undergo workshop with the Australian coaches to hone up more their skills in preparation for the 24th SEA Games slated in December 6-16 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. “Our objective is to finally beat Singapore which has beaten us by a point (6-7) in the 2005 Manila SEA Games,” said Joseph. The Philippines settled for silver medal as Singapore took the gold with accumulated 10 points. The RP nationals garnered only eight points. (PNA) |
