Queenslanders through to NWPL semifinals
Sydney (May 22).— Queensland’s two female National Water Polo League teams have won through to Wednesday’s semifinals at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
While KFC Queensland Breakers won their series 2-0, the Brisbane Barracudas needed a third match and two wins today to beat outgoing champions Cronulla Sharks. The Barracudas played superb water polo throughout and can thank goalkeeper Emma Jackson for some fantastic saves as the Barracudas won the third match 10-8 tonight at the Peter Montgomery Pool at Sydney University.
Earlier in the day, the Barracudas came back from Monday’s 17-15 loss with a 10-9 victory in extra time to force the third game.
International Jane Moran levelled the game at 8-all on the final hooter to force extra time.
The Breakers also had a close game but emerged 9-8 victors over Balmain Tigers for a 2-0 series win.
The Barracudas will face Sydney University Lions in the semifinals and the Breakers will clash with minor premiers Fremantle Mariners from Perth.
Sydney University Lions also needed a third game to win their series with Victorian Tigers.
The Tigers won Monday’s match10-9 but the three-time champion Lions turned the tables with a 9-7 win in the morning and a 9-5 win in the evening.
Even the efforts of the NWPL’s longest-serving player, Trent Birkett, playing his 300th game in his 18th consecutive season, could not stem the Lions’ flow of goals.
Perth’s champion Fremantle Mariners team earlier won their series 2-0 against Balmain Tigers with an 11-5 margin.
Sydney University will play minor premiers Wests waterpolo Magpies from Sydney and Fremantle will play No 2 KFC Queensland Breakers.
