Bronze will be a bonus
THE Malaysian waterpolo team have set a modest target of just one bronze medal in Korat as the athletes have been unable to have a centralised training programme.
Coach Ting Chooi Chin said it is mainly due to work commitment that the players cannot train together for long periods.
"The players are from Penang, Malacca, Negri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur and we can only get them together for training on weekends," said Chooi Chin.
"They train on their own the rest of the days."
"The national players only began their preparation in June unlike our rivals who started in January," he added.
Chooi Chin tipped the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand to be strong medal contenders, so a bronze or anything better would be a bonus.
The team played in tournaments in Singapore and Indonesia during their initial stages of preparation and the results have not been encouraging.
"But the players have made progress. They are working hard and I am sure they will give their best in Korat."
The national team won the Malaysian Open Championship held two weeks ago by winning all of their five matches. Kuala Lumpur took the silver and Indonesia's East Java picked up the bronze.
