BANGKOK, Thailand, April 8, 2007 – Heads of Delegation for the 2007 Bangkok Universiade have met here for the past two days.
Some 49 representatives met to gather information about their stay at the Games and to have a look at the practice and competition venues as well as the Athletes’ Village. The Heads of Delegation meeting is one of the most important events of the hosting country prior to the Games and is the only opportunity for the Organizing Committee (UBOC 2007) to present the latest developments of the Universiade preparations to the participants.

FISU says that UBOC considered this meeting as a ‘grand rehearsal' for all committees and concerning parties. Staff and volunteers were assigned to work as if the Universiade was in progress. Actual protocols and procedures such as immigration, reception, accreditation and security services were applied. This is to ensure that each UBOC mechanism will work effectively and impeccably during the Universiade. To the delight of the Thai, to host the 2007 Universiade is a truly auspicious occasion as it is a chance to celebrate the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Additionally, the Thai also take great pride in hosting these Games.
"As host, we are ready for the 24th Universiade,' Minister of Education Professor Dr. Wichit Srisa-An said at a press conference. ‘We had already experienced hosting many major international sporting events which resulted in our best preparation in all aspects such as the competition venues, athletes' village, transportation, protocols as well as the live broadcast of sporting competitions, the main press centre and the international broadcasting centre. We are ready to give a warm welcome to the athletes, officials and all visitors from the participating universities around the world to visit Thailand in an atmosphere of cordial friendship and smiles.
To host the 24th Universiade will be of great benefit to everyone involved, especially the youngsters who, in a not to distant future, will become important human resources of all nations," the Minister said. Numbers So Far Based on the first draft of quantitative entries of 87 countries so far – more than 40 delegations will be added – a general total of 9,241 participants is expected at the 24th Summer Universiade in Bangkok, next August from the 8th to 18th. The numbers up to now: 3,630 male athletes 2,936 female athletes 6,566 total athletes 2,655 officials 9,241 general total The biggest delegations so far are: Thailand: 573 Japan: 452 Russia: 485 Ukraine: 337 South Africa: 328 9,800 beds will be available on the Thammasat University Campus. At the press conference FISU President George E. Killian presented softball equipment donated by the International Softball Federation to delegates of the Wat Banmai School in Saraburi and the Ban Koh Sireh School in Phuket, two schools that are financially supported by FISU. FISU stands for Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International University Sports Federation), founded in 1949. FISU's main responsibility is the supervision of both Summer and Winter Universiades as well as the World University Championships. The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance only to the Olympic Games.
The Summer Universiade consists of 12 compulsory sports (Athletics - Basketball - Fencing - Football - Gymnastics - Swimming - Diving - Water Polo – Tennis – Table Tennis - Judo - Volleyball) and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country. The record figures are 7,816 participants in Izmir, Turkey, in 2005 and 174 countries in Daegu, Korea in 2003.
The Winter Universiade consists of 7 compulsory sports (Alpine skiing - Nordic skiing composed of jump, cross country & combined - Biathlon - Ice Hockey - Short-Track - Speed Skating - Figure Skating - Curling) and one or two optional sports also chosen by the host country. The Winter Universiade gathered a record 2,223 participants from a record number of 50 countries in Innsbruck, Austria in 2005. The World University Championships are organized every even year in sports which do not figure on the compulsory Universiade program. In 2006 28 different WUC will be staged all over the world.
